The Galway Early Music Festival
Galway - Ireland
mid-May
http://www.galwayearlymusic.cominfo@galwayearlymusic.com

Known for its exciting programming of European medieval, renaissance and baroque music, the Festival also puts a special emphasis on exploring music in Ireland in this period as well as promoting current Irish performers of Early Music. Along with the more formal concerts, the festival features lunchtime concerts, schools and family events, free workshops and performance throughout the medieval centre of the city. One special feature of the programming is that no concerts run concurrently, so a Festival visitor can enjoy all that the Festival has to offer without having to make any difficult decisions.

In the past, the Festival has featured (and premiered in the West of Ireland) performers such as Jordi Savall, Red Priest, Andrew Lawrence-King & the Harp Consort, Oni Wytars, Musica Antiqua, Matthew Halls and many more.

NEXT PERIOD PROGRAM

GALWAY EARLY MUSIC FESTIVAL , MAY 16 – 18, 2008
Sensuous – A Multisensory Musical Experience

Music has always appealed to more senses than just hearing. Sight – music by candle light, in a church or castle, musicians costumed.. Smell – church incense, a feast cooking, the country-side or a tavern. Taste: musicians at a feast, bawdy songs over a tankard of ale. Each concert of this year’s festival brings an added dimension to the audience’s experience of the music. Whether it is the venue, a concert by candle light, audacious costumes and staging or a historically informed costumed re-creation of early performance., this year’s concerts are sensual!

Featuring: I Furiosi (Canada) with a programme entitled 'Addicted to Love', The Orlando Consort & Cois Cladaigh Chamber Choir with 'Messe de Nostre Dame' by Machaut, Javier Sainz (Spain) playing the harp music of Scotland and Morisca (directed by Laoise O'Brien, Ireland). Workshops in Early Irish Harp, medieval percussion, and Recorder Ensemble. Free events and Schools Concert.
